Murray

Greetings were’ received from the Queen, the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie), the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr S. W. Smith), and the member of Parliament for Hurunui (Mr W H. Gillespie) by Mr and Mrs Thomas Murray, of Kaiapoi, when they recently celebrated their platinum wedding. The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr N. E. Kirk) also called at their home on the day of their wedding anniversary. Born in Scotland, Mr Murray came to New Zealand in the ship Hereford when he was 11. A gardener, he was employed for a number of years at the homestead of Mr J. S. White, at Ohoka, but he was also engaged in a number of other occupations..

Mrs Murray, who was formerly Miss Sarah Webber, was born in Wales, and came to New Zealand when she was five. She was educated at the Prebbleton School. She is 88. Mr and Mrs Murray were married in the All Saints’ Anglican Church at Prebbleton on April 13, 1892.

Although 89, Mr Murray still takes a keen interest in his garden, and on the day of his wedding anniversary amazed those present' by digging two rows of potatoes. Mr and Mrs Murray had 10 children, seven boys and three girls. One son was killed in World War I, and one was awarded the Military Medal. They have 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
