Billiards INTER-CLUB MATCHES
Season Begins On May 1 The 1957 season of the Canterbury Amateur Billiards Association will open next week with the inter-club billiards- tournament. Thirty-five teams will take part, and this is a record. On Wednesday 20 teams will play. They will be divided into two sections of 10 teams each. The B grade will play up to 200 points, and the C grade to 150 points. On Thursday there will be 15 games—A grade, six teams, 200 points up; and D grade, nine teams, 150 points up. Although the field in the A grade is small, it has the potential for a keen, interesting contest. Last season’s A grade winners, Richmond, with T. Yesberg, G. Cormack and M. Cook, is again entered. Cook. No. 3, replaces K. Murphy, Pioneer is strongly represented by D. Higgins. E. Simons, and D. Prince, all recently transferred from the P. and St. Albans Recreation has a young and, improving trio, M. Hamilton, J. Cowan, and D. Mann. This club won the B grade tournament in 1955-56. and its players should add interest to the competition. V. Choat. C. Watson, runner-up to T. Yesberg in last season’s Canterbury championships, and P. Duncan, who has performed well to date in the B grade, will comprise the Christchurch Working Men’s team. The remaining club, the Christchurch R.S.A., has two teams engaged—No. 1 team: R. Franks, who holds a national snooker title, D. Collie, and R. Stewart; No. 2 team. A. Geddes, J. Gray, and J. Gamer. Play in all games begins at 7.30 p.m.
