BACKING BUSES AT TERMINI

Safety Committee Suggestions

The backing of buses at many Christchurch termini could be avoided by the resiting of power and telephone poles, or by the buses making a circuit of the block, said Mr J. Shankland, jun. (Tramway Workers’ Union), at a meeting on Wednesday of the Christchurch Metropolitan • Road Safety Committee. “In Auckland the last backing point on city services is now being eliminated by. co-operation between the local authorities,” he said.

There was a danger to both persons and vehicles in backing the Christchurch Transport Board's 33ft buses, said Mr Shankland, but in most cases the risk could be avoided simply. “Why not place the termini where there is no need to back?” asked Mr D. J. Cunningham (Christchurch Carriers’ Association). "We have trucks, many of them more than 30ft long, which are meeting the same problem, while fuliy-laderi, all over town all day long.”

Pole Shifting “There are any number of poles in the city we would like shifted,” said Mr G. P. Kellar, traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council. “We were given a quotation for the removal of one, carrying a great number of important lines and cables. The cost

would have been about £650.” The committee decided, on Mr Shankland’s motion, to express its concern to the New Zealand Road Safety Committee and also appended a list of Christchurch termini where backing is required, and suggested solutions in each case.

In specific instances the committee decided to ask' the appropriate authorities to investigate the possibility of removing poles, and to ask the Christchurch Transport Board to consider the possibility of circling blocks at termini. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a panel of speakers to address lunch-time gatherings, and to arrange one or two pilot meetings. The committee also decided to sponsor a competition which would give newspaper readers an opportunity to submit their own ideas on road safety. 9
