Harvards And Schools
Sir, —A recent letter by an airman requires an answer. Admitting that Harvards are useless in themselves, it suggests that they provide a basic training transferable to other situations. This is educationally sound, but not penetrating enough. The way to teach the basic principles of flight is to use gliders. This would, incidentally, save money and petrol and. allow plans for new schools and the university at Riccarton to proceed. The letter’s insolent suggestion that jets will be worse and that schools are noisv anyway is no more than we Riccarton people deserve. We have been ox-like in our suffering. Those who are not too coarse in their responses to care about invasion of their homes by much noise have been fatalistic. Promise of defence cuts combined with a coming election give us a chance to do ACK April 23, 1957.
