Oram Avenue
Sir, —I happened to be in Oram avenue on Easter Saturday and the traffic conditions there on that day were appalling. No intelligent person could say the conditions were not dangerous. Half the proposed car park was packed with cars going and coming—cars which could easily have been parked on the public ramps at the beach. The sides of Oram avenue were lined with cars and Transport Board buses were attempting to manoeuvre through the congestion. If the City Council insists upon tar-sealing this area—in direct opposition to the wishes of the ratepayers—it can only be assumed the rights of ratepayers in this residential area are being usurped for the sole purpose of benefiting the shopkeepers. When the New Brighton shopkeepers feared they would have to close on Saturdays, I understand the matter was taken to Parliament. If the ratepayers’ money is to be wasted in relegating Oram avenue to an unsightly parking place for cars, then a higher authority than the City Council should be approached.— Yours, etc., WITH “DISGUSTED” ALL THE WAY.
