FUEL OIL IN LAKE

Swan And Ducks Coated (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 25. The white swan at the Victoria Park lake, Stratford, was a black swan this morning and the ducks were looking sick as the result of about 500 gallons of fuel oil draining from the railway yard into the creek which feeds the lake.

Breakage of a fuel pipe-line, while a locomotive was being refulled near the engine shed, let the oil into the creek through a sump. Fire hydrants were turned on to put more water into the creek to raise the lake level so that the oil, floating on the surface, could drain off over the outlet-spillway. The parks superintendent, Mr E. P. Blanchard, is doing all he can to clean the swan by washing it in soapy water and rinsing it off repeatedly. The ducks are not so badly off they had enough sense to get on to the banks before they were saturated with oil. The swan, however, swam round in it until it was rescued and it is still doubtful if the bird will survive.
