Soccer INCREASE IN ENTRIES
New Grade To Be Formed
Entries from 42 teams have been received for the four competitions conducted by the Canterbury Football Association. At last evening’s meeting of the association it was announced that in addition .to the 10 entries already accepted for senior division, there were 10 for second division, 12 for third, and •10 for juniors. To cope with the increased number of entries, it was decided to play qualifying rounds in the first three competitions, and at the end of those rounds, the two lowest senior teams would be moved down to the second division, four teams from second division would move down to third division, and the bottom eight teams in third division would form a new fourth division competition. The president (Mr M. Gordon) reported that the majority of the clubs had signified approval of the proposal to levy players to help meet the cost of the increased number of grounds to be used this year, and the Is levy ifnposed by the New Zealand Association. On the motion of Mr J. Smith, seconded by Mr S. Overton, it was decided that all open grade players, with the exception of those in teams from secondary schools, would be levied the sum of ss.
. The Christchurch City club applied for permission for first and third grade teams to travel to Wellington at the Queen’s Birthday to play teams from Miramar Rangers. As competition matches would be played in Christchurch on the Saturday, it was decided that permission could only be given if the matches at Wellington were played on the Sunday or Monday. Advice was received from the Canterbury Rugby Union that steps had been taken to* ensure that Rugby players would not use soccer grounds in Hagley Park for practices. Advice was received from the New Zealand Association that Mr Gordon Smith had been elected a South Island selector.
Two Overseas Matches
If the application of the Canterbury Football Association for use of the ground is granted, the visiting Chinese soccer team will play Canterbury at Lancaster Park on Saturday, June 8. The team will arrive in Christchurch on the evening of June 5. Application will also be made for the use of Lancaster Park for the visit of the Austrian team, a tentative date being given as Wednesday, July 31.
More Referees Wanted
The increased number of teams entering competitions is causing problems for the Canterbury Football Asociation. At last evening’s meeting, advice Was received from the Referees’ Association that it was unable to supply sufficient referees for next Saturday’s games, and the services of management committee members and coaches of teams had to be enlisted to cover all games.
“It is rather serious when we find that the number of players and teams are increasing and the' number of referees is decreasing,” said Mr T. M. McGuigan. Mr J. Smith suggested that a personal approach to players and followers of the game might produce results. “It looks as though we will have to follow the practice followed in
other sports and call on senior players to referee junior games,” suggested Mr M. Gordon.
Representative Games .
Canterbury will play its first representative Soccer match on May 18. Advice has been received by the Canterbury Football Association that the Wellington Association has approved of that date, for the first of the home and away games for the Gordon Cup, the match to be played at Wellington. On Queen’s Birthday, June 3, Canterbury will play Otago at English Park, the first of the two games for the Jones Cup.
Eire Beats Ulster
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) BELFAST, April 22. A goal eight minutes from time gave the League of Ireland (Eire) a 2-1 victory over the Irish League (Northern Ireland) in an interleague Soccer match today. The teams were level, 1-1, at half-time.
A crowd of 20,000 at Windsor Park saw the League of Ireland produce good football in the opening period. Leavy, the Leajgue of Ireland’s 19-year-old centre-forward, scored the winning goal when the Irish League goalkeeper, Rea, failed to hold a dropping ball.
