DEDICATION OF HALL
St. Peter’s, Upper Riccarton
About £2OOO is estimated to have been saved by the use of voluntary labour in the construction of St. Peter’s Parish Church Hall, Upper Riccarton. The hall will be dedicated on Sunday afternoon by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren).
Construction of the hall began in November,. 1953, when- the foundations were laid by voluntary workers from the parish, under the supervision of a builder. The framework and the roof were completed in this way, but construction lapsed when the builder was unable to continue supervising the job, because of other commitments. Another builder then took over the job and completed the hall. However, all glazing, painting and electrical work in the hall was done by volunteer workers. Built in brick veneer, with large windows to catch the sun, the hall covers 3500 square feet. Included are a modern kitchen, cloak rooms and an equipment room. Memorial There is also a parish room for meetings, which will be dedicated as a memorial to the late Rev. H. T. York, his wife, and his brother, Archdeacon G. W. York. The Rev. H. T. York was vicar of the parish from 1910 to 1939, and his brother was for some years an assistant curate to him. The main hall is equipped with 250 modern stacking chairs, and will have screens and tables for Sunday school work. The hall will be used for general parish purposes, including recreation and youth activities. The total cost, including furnishings, was £B5OO.
After the dedication at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday, there will be an evening service as an act of thanksgiving, at 4.30 p.m. instead of 7 o’clock.
