The rose bowl presented by Mrs Ingham for the winner of the competition for the most - entries during the year was awarded to Mrs W. Nunweek at the annual meeting of the Harewood West Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Mrs Guy presided. The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs H. Broadhurst; vice-presidents, Mesdames Hudson, K. Watson and McConnel; committee, Mesdames C. Ingham, L. Murray, Muschamp and Strathdee; delegates to provincial executive, Mesdames Broadhurst, W. Nunweek and McConnel; advisory members, Mesdames Broadhurst and McConnel.
Major Bennett, of the Salvation Army, spoke on the causes of broken marriages at the April meeting of the Spreydon League of Mothers. Mrs S. J. Kay presided and one new member was enrolled. The choir sang songs.
Missionary work in the Solomon Islands was described by Mrs J. D. Thompson at the April meeting of the Holy Trinity (Avonside) Mission Circle. The devotional, service was conducted by Archdeacon W. Trevor Williams and the president (Mrs S. Crosier) thanked the members for the sew-, ing and other work done to' raise funds.
Bringing the latest United States fashions to despondent servicemen’s wives in Britain is the £2OOO-a-year job Mrs I. B. Northcross has found for herself. The 35-year-old woman with headquarters in Washington will spend much of her time in the air, flying to Britain, France. Italy, Morocco. Libya, Spain and wherever else there is a United States air base with American fashion-hungry wives. With her will fly a group of models to show off in full style the clothes the girls are missing.
Entertainment at a recent meeting of the Gold Star Mothers’ Club was provided by Miss Edna Neville with elocutionary items. Competition winners were Mesdames G. Williams and McDonald. Mrs Scott presided.
“Food and Customs of Other Countries” is the subject of a series of lectures at present being conducted by Mrs Shepherd at the Y.W.C.A. On display during the lectures are delectable curries, desserts, seeds, and nuts used in various dishes. Interesting articles and pictures of India and Burma were also shown at a recent meeting.
