WAIMAKARIRI BRIDGE

Fewer Cars During Easter The late Easter this year had its effect on traffic over the holiday period. On Saturday, usually a popular day for beach parties, only 5324 vehicles crossed the Waimakariri river bridge, compared w’ith 6816 last year. On Monday, another popular day for outings, peak hour on the bridge was between 4 p.m. and 3 p.m. The motor-cycling

meeting at Cust finished earlier, and probably because it was darker earlier in the evening most motorists went home sooner.

Over the four days—Friday to Monday inclusive—33.6ll vehicles crossed the bridge, compared with 35,542 last year, according to Transport Department figures. On Good Friday the total was five more than last year, on Saturday it was 5324 (6816), and the peak hour was between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.. on Sunday it was 8987 (9084), and on Monday it was 112,135 (11,764).
