TROTTING Light Brigade’s Progeny Dominated Addington

Progeny of this season’s leading sire, Light Brigade, dominated racing on the three days of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington. They won seven races and were placed nine times for £6llO in stakes. They were particularly successful in the races for trotters, winning three of the six races for horses of this gait.

Battle Cry won twice and Barravey once among the fast-class horses. Lookaway, the biggest winner at the meeting with £1520, was the most successful pacer sired by Light Brigade. Dillon Hall finished second to Light Brigade with £2BOO, the result of one win and 17 placings. Ten of his progeny won money at the meeting, compared with 11 by Light Brigade. U. Scott, which has been prominent on the sires’ list for manyyears, was third with £2095, the result of two wins and nine placings. Nine of his progeny earned money, the biggest winner being the New Zealand Trotting Stakes winner, Alight. The colonial-bred sire. Fallacy, had only Dignus and False Step to represent him at the meeting They won three races and gained one placing for £ 1940, placing him fourth on the list at the meeting. Altogether the progeny of 33 sires earned money at the meeting. Fourteen of these horses were bred in New Zealand, 11 in the. United States, seven in Australia and seven in Italy. Thirteen of them were credited with over £5OO at the meeting. Stakes and trophies distributed at the meeting were valued at £23,375, an average of more than £970 a race.

Holmes trained the winners of three races—Lookaway (twice) and Tobacco Road—and he drove two other winners in Alight and Golden Chimes, bringing his total in this department to five. R. Young, who won twice with Battle Cry, and M. C. McTigue. who won with Tactician and Maharaja, were the only others to train and drive more than one winner. Those with one training success were: G. S. Benny, J. R. Woodcock, P. Stewart, C. C. Devine, H. S. Donaldson. J. Wilson, J. L. Behrns, A. A. Jones, W. L. Heron, D. G. Nyhan, R. G. Cameron, N. L. Berkett, D. J. Campbell. Drivers with one win were: M. L. Edwards, W. P. Walsh, D. G. Jones, T. L. Thomas, H. S- Donaldson, J.L. Behrns, W. L. Heron, D. D. Nyhan. D. C. Watts. N. L. Berkett, D. J. Campbell. Leading Owners Mr J. Smyth, of West Melton, who recently returned to New j Zealand from a trip to Ireland, was the most successful of 15 owners, who received over £5OO during the three days at Addington. False Step and Barravey earned £1665 for Mr Smyth. They were the only horses he had engaged at the meeting.

Mr C. L. Rhodes, of Christchurch, received £1520 as a result of two wins by Lookaway, and he was second on the list, followed by Mr and Mrs E. S. Baxter, of Mayfield, who won £ 1495 with Battle Cry. Mr J. McKay, of Taupaki, owner of Danniel’s Pride, received £ 1400. including a trophy valued at £lOO. Mr M. C. McTigue. of Methven, with £1195. was the only other owner to receive over £lOOO.
