RACING TESS WINS AGAIN AT RICCARTON

Shoal Beaten By Only Half A Length

Tess, winner of the Great Easter Handicap on Monday, rounded off a good double at the Canterbury jockey Club’s autumn meeting by winning the Dominion Handicap at Riccarton yesterday.

The second favourite of 10, Tess led from the home turn, as she did in the Great Easter Handicap, and ran out the mile and a quarter strongly to beat Shoal by half a length. Shoal finished much better than any of the others, sustaining a strong run from the half mile, but Tess, the runner-up to Shoal in the C.J.C. Midsummer Handicap in February, had established such a handy lead going to the furlong that she was not seriously challenged.

Tess, a four-year-old Ruthless mare trained at Riccarton by J. E. Shaw for Mr G. R. Macdonald, was again riden by W. D. Skelton. She was the second favourite in win-and-place betting. The favourite was Copenhagen, which finished third. The withdrawal of the North Island gallopers, Royal Zorra and Jungle, robbed the race of some of its Interest, but Fuel put the North Island back into the picture when she decisively beat the milers in the Templeton Handicap, the second leg of the double. -i,.

Fuel did not test Juventas in the Warstep Stakes on the first day of the meeting, but finished solidly for her placing. Another solid finishing run characterised her performance in the Templeton Handicap, which was her second win for Mr. G. Deakin. for whom she is trained at Hastings by W. D. Young. A three-year-old daughter of Defaulter and the well-performed Salmagundi mare The Grkte, Fuel was the favourite, but at fairly good odds. Holders of 2546 5s tickets (983 on-course) on the Tess-Fuel combination received £3l 15s for £l. Fuel was one of three successful North Island gallopers yesterday. The others were Imitation and Holman, two of the easiest winners on the programme. Imitation was a class above the other two-year-olds in the Autumn Nursery Handicap. He was giving from 121 b to 221 b to the others, but ran right away from them and won by six lengths. The Wanganui-trained Holman, a stablemate of the first-day winners Mindanao and Juventas, won the -Tasman Handicap, for three-year-old hacks, at his leisure. The track was again holding but the weather#was fine. The on-course totalisator turnover was £68,131 10s, including £7660 10s on the double, compared with £61,476 for the second day last year. Tess Beats Shoal Tess ran past the weakening King Robin into the lead on the home turn in the Dominion Handicap and quickly established a lead the strongly-finishing Shoal reduced but could not close. Shoal was Tess’s only challenger in the last furlong; the favourite, Copenhagen, was a length and a half back third. King Robin bounded in the air at the start and was slowest away, but he sped into the lead inside the first two furlongs and went clear by five lengths soon after. Tess and Copenhagen led the Chase after King Robin along the back straight and round to the half mile, where they had reduced the pacemaker’s lead to three lengths. Watch and Wait. Demand, Fulgent, Shoal, and Scuppered were then closing up, but the others were struggling. Watch • and Wait reached the end of. her run after following Tess into line, and Demand felt the strain soon after. Copenhagen could do no more than hold his position* but Shoal maintained a - solid run, though Tess held her lead without much trouble. Copenhagen was unchallenged for third clear of Scuppered. Demand was six lengths back fifth and three lengths clear of Fulgent. Teaka made some ground for seventh, two lengths back, clear of Calcutta Sweep, Watch and Wait, and King Robin. The Second LegA strong run down the outside Gained Fuel to a decisive win in the Templeton Handicap, the second leg of the double. Fuel, one of only two three-year-olds in the field, was a good way from the leaders for the first half-mile, but mounted a strong run from the turn, where she was about five places back, and reached a short lead near the furlong. In the end, she won going away by two lengths from Fair Summer, which inched Motueka out of second place. Palace was soon pacemaking and was closely followed to the halfmile by Bugle Boy, Fair Summer. Leprechaun, Wee Durham. Desperado, Humber Hawk, and Mptueka, with Fuel next after a short gap. Bugle Boy was one of the first beaten in the leading bunch, and Palace was mastered by Fuel, Fair Summer, and Motueka closer to home. Fuel changed ground slightly just inside the furlong, but ran clear quickly when straightened and won with ease. Palace was fourth a length behind Motueka. Eileen Gloss, wide out on the track, did well to finish fifth, and Humber Hawk. Ballast, and Bugle Bov were in line next. Ballast did well to finish so far up after a slow start. Wee Durham was next, ahead of Mundus, which was lame after. Nasib bounded in the air at the Start, and The Bruiser was a slow beginner. Imitation Too Good Imitation was a class above the others in the Autumn Nursery Handicap, in which he was top weight and a solid favourite. It was his third win in 15 starts for his Trentham owner-trainer. A. E. L. McMullan. and his record also includes three seconds, four thirds, and one fourth. One of his thirds was in the Champagne Stakes on the first day erf the meeting. lmll«Uon wk handy elose to lead half way through the

race, and he spurted clear soon after, quickly establishing his winning margin of five lengths. Fidelis improved a few places for second, beating Miss Fire by half a length for that position. Miss Fire was in the second line at the three furlongs, and was one of a bunch leading a fruitless chase after Imitation at the furlong. Lucky Gay was fourth a length and a half back, narrowly beating All Fair, which lost ground when he veered towards the outside of the course after being with the leaders to the middle stages. Search Warrant showed ability to finish sixth after being checked about half way through the race. Golden Ribbon was the best of the others. Coral Shah drifted to the tail of the field at the start.
