Cattle-Raising On Kokoda Trail

A New Zealander is raising beef cattle on the Kokoda Trail, the famous World War II landmark in the Owen Stanley range.

He Is 29-year-old Peter Henwood, of Pleasant street, Onehunga. For 18 months, Mr Henwood has been opening up cattle country at the back of Kokoda tor the Kienzle brothers, owners of an 11,000-acre rubber plantation in the area.

The Kienzles’ intention is to establish a butchery and freezer at Kokoda and to supply Port Moresby with air-freighted beef by the end of 1958. Kokoda is 80 miles from Port Moresby—five day’s walking, or 35 minutes in an aircraft. “This is country where you can talk to a man across' a ravine and then have to walk two days to reach him," said Mr Henwood.
