MORE ALIENS IN N.Z.
Increase Of 4.8 Per Cent
The number of aliens registered. in New Zealand increased by 4.8 per cent, in the 12 months to April 1 this year, according to figures released yesterday by the Department of Statistics. ..J 116 total this year was 26,381 (16,832 men and 9549 women). Last year the figures were 25,184 (16,337; 8847). Most of the aliens were Netherlands citizens—l 2,493 this year, compared with 12,051 on April 1 last year. Of this year’s total 8061 were men and 4432 were women, showing no change in proportions in the 12 months. After the Dutch and the Chinese, many aliens were from Poland (1548), Greece (1110), Jugoslavia (1089), and the United States (1006). , Hungarian Increase But the greatest increase in numbers was among Hungarians (473), Austrians (113), Chinese (76 —the total now stands at 3484), Norwegians (64), Danes (56), and Germans (53). Decreases in the number of registered aliens were shown among citizens of Poland (a drop of 131), Latvia (55), Czechoslovakia (46), Russia (29), and Lithuania (25). There were 152 stateless persons in New Zealand at April 1. Last year on the same date there were 158. These figures do not include those aliens who are under the age of 16, have diplomatic status, are “certain temporary visitors” to the Dominion, or are Western Samoans, except in special circumstances.
