Basketball Tourney

Splendid organising and handicapping of the 150 teams which competed in the Canterbury Basketball Association’s handicap tournament recently, was in a large measure responsible for the outstanding success of the tournament. The programme was begun at 10 a-m. and the final game was completed at 4 p.m. Some players played as many as 12 matches to reach the final. Sacred Heart teams met with the greatest success. Sacred Heart G won the tournament and the Mark Kershaw Memorial Shield. The A team won its section and in the junior section Sacred Heart teams won the top half of the section. The club’s A team tied with Charmonte Models (third grade) for the Bill Bowden Cup for runners-up in the senior division.

Success also attended the efforts of the Technical club’s teams. In the junior section Technical teams played against one another in the finals of the bottom portion and the Technical fifth grade B team won the Eileen Lane Cup for runner-up in the tournament. St. Mary’s College A, a third grade team, and Teachers’ College C, a second grade team, tied for first place in the senior section and are the joint holders of the Falloon Trophy. Yachting Safety At a special general meeting of the Canterbury R Class Squadron, a recommendation urging stronger safety precautions in cases of capsizes was given unanimous support. The recommendation stated: — “That acting on the advice of a senior Leander Trophy official the committee strongly recommends that every boat be equipped with a painter not less than 6ft long, and not less than lin circumference, rope attached to or near the stem and suitable for towing purposes after a capsize.” “That all boats be so rigged that a man in the water can release either side stay while the boat is submerged.” These recommendations have not been put forward without a very considerable amount of forethought and planning. Although these ideas will not be enforced, they can and will become part of the sailing instructions for some of the big R

class events if the weather so warrants the necessity. It is to be hoped all yachtsmen will give these remits their sympathy, as pick-up boats can not always be relied upon, and in heavy weather many capsizes can make rescue work dangerous.
