(Rec. 10 p.m.) . „„ 1 PHOENIX (Arizona), April 22. : About 10ft of the left wing of a i Frontier Airlines DC-3 was ripped i off in flight yesterday when the J aircraft hit a violent downdraught. The pilot brought his stormbuffeted machine, with 23 frigh- i tened passengers and a crew of ■ three, in for a safe landing at - Phoenix half an hour later. Airline officials immediately began trying to determine whether the aircraft had scraped against the ground. The airline's operations manager said, after examining the ragged edge of the wing, that it had apparently “hit some object, but we're not at all sure what it was.’’ Officials said that 10ft to 12ft of the total 95ft wingspan had been chopped off, but most of the “flying” surface was intact The pilot, Captain Dale Welling, reported that the DC-3 had been battered by turbulent air currents from Prescott to Phoenix, a distance of about 85 air miles.
