GILT CROSS FOR GALLANTRY
Award To Timaru Boy Scout The Dominion Chief Scout (Sir Willoughby Norrie) has approved the award of the Gilt Cross for Gallantry to Scout D. D. Shields, of Timaru, for the rescue of a boy from drowning at Brassel’s Bridge. The announcement from Dominion Headquarters of the Boy Scouts Association says that Shields showed commendable courage and initiative in going to the rescue of a felloe scout who had plunged into deep water. He was dragged under twice before bringing the boy to safety. The Certificate of Meritorious Conduct has been awarded to Miss Rosalie Sterrit, of Christchurch, in recognition of her courage under suffering. Although in pain for a number of years as a result of an accident she has carried on in, scouting until a recent operation was necessary. Mrs A. Coleman, of Nelson, has been awarded a bar to the Medal of Merit. A Medal of Merit has been awarded to D. A. Gridgeman, of Oamaru, and Mrs C. E. Widdowson and H. O. Marsh, of the same town, have been awarded certificates of merit. These awards are for good services to the Scout Movement. The Dominion Chief Commissioner (Major-General L. K. Lockhart) has also approved the award of letters of commendation to Mrs A. C. Stringer, of Nelson, and Mrs R. M. Perano, of Picton.
