Mercy Landing By Airliner

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) ROME, April 21. A 8.0.A.C. airliner flying from Nigeria to London made a mercy landing in Rome today in a vain bid to save the life of an Australian passenger’s sick baby. The baby died while being rushed to hospital by ambulance. Mrs Helen Johansen, the wife of a Shell Oil Company official in Owerri, Nigeria, was taking her 11-months-old baby, Jane Ann, to England for medical treatment. After leaving Tripoli, the only stop on the flight, the baby’s condition became worse and the airliner’s captain decided to put down at Rome. The airliner later continued its flight to London. Mrs Johansen stayed in Rome.
