TROTTING Zetland-Fair Lead Greymouth Double
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, April 22. Fair Lead brought a welcome change of luck to the Harewood trainer, A. R. McKenzie, when she won the Westland Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Victoria Park today. She gradually closed on the leaders, and came away in the straight for an easy win. The first leg, the Eclipse Handicap, was won by J. B. Pringle’s representative, Zetland, which won almost as decisively as Fair Lead.
The win favourite. Lady Attack, lost a great deal of ground at the : start of the Eclipse Handicap. Buckaloo began best and led out of the : straight from Zetland, Ben Lee, Young Paul, and Gay Helen. Zetland took the lead in the second round from Young Paul, Buckaloo, Gay Helen, and Lady Attack, which . had got a good run through on the fence. There was no change in the ' order, except that General Advance ■ made a fast forward move going : down the back the last time. Here
Lady Attack met interference and dropped back. Zetland was first into the straight and had no difficulty holding off all challenges to win by a length and a half. In a photo-finish for the other placings, Buckaloo beat Ben Lee by a nose. Weekender was a length away, followed by Lady Attack. She was unlucky to get a bad start, and then be knocked back at approaching the home bend for the last time. Weekender became prominent over the last circuit, and did well to finish fourth. She was followed home by Disraeli, General Advance, and Gay Helen. Westland Handicap The Templeton-trained Battle Fling was a hot each-way favourite for the Westland Handicap, carrying more than twice as much as Lord Mackworth or Fair Lead. No excuses could be made for Battle Fling, as he was one of the leading bunch until leaving the straight the last time. Here he received a slight check, but this was not sufficient to affect his chances. Battle Fling was the early leader from Dalewen, Lord Mackworth, Aerophlite, and McGimpy. Dalewen took over six furlongs from home from Auburn’s Best, Battle Fling, Aerophlite, and Lord Mackworth, which were well clear of Fair Lead. Fair Lead gradually made up leeway over the final quarter-mile, ano after following Auburn's Best and Lord Mackworth to the straight entrance, came right, away to win by four lengths. Lord Mackworth was a length and a half in front of Auburn’s Best, with a gap of six lengths to Dalewen. The meeting was held in fine weather, before a good crowd, and on a surprisingly fast track after overnight rain. Super Attack fell during the running of the Richmond Handicap, but neither the driver, D. Donaldson, nor the horse were injured. Super Attack was produced later in the day to win the Autumn Handicap J. W. McCready, owner-trainer oi Joey, was fined £2 for failing to notify a joint interest in Amelia, and the two horses had to be bracketed. The winning doubles combination of Zetland and Fair Lead returned £4B 13s 6d for £l. On-course the totalisator handled £24,038 10s, including £2162 10s on the double, compared with £25,463 last year.
