FLUORIDATION EXPERIMENT
Result Of New York Test (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW ROCHELLE (New York) April 21 The City Health Commissioner has reported that there has been a decrease of more than 50 per cent, in tooth decay among children in certain age groups since fluoridiation was started at New Rochelle in 1951.
The Commissioner (Dr. Chester Hicks) said that a controlled study was carried out by examination of third and fourth-grade children in five elementary schools.
Between September, 1951, and February, 1952, said Dr. Hicks, examinations of 366 children disclose 626 decayed teeth. During a similar period in 1956-57, he said, 434 children in the same grade showed only 350 decays.
Dr. Hicks said That the number of decayed teeth a child was 1.71 without fluoridation of the water supply and .81 with it.
