LAWN TENNIS Burton To Play In Final Of Easter Tournament

In spite of the loss of play on Saturday, events in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s Easter tournament were well ahead when play finished last evening. With one semi-final of the men’s singles decided, the top seed for the tournament, G. A. Burton, of the Avonside Club and a Canterbury representative player, has reached the final. Burton’s semi-final was played late yesterday afternoon because his opponent, F. Scarlett, of Wellington, would have been unable to play today but could, if he had won, have returned for a final next Saturday. Ranked about twelfth among Wellington senior men, Scarlett lost to Burton, who is ranked second in Canterbury, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6. Scarlett had previously beaten in the quarter-finals the fifth-ranked Canterbury man, M. C. Healey (Cashmere), who was seeded third for this tournament. The score was 2-6, 13-11, 6-4. Second seeded, C. W. Pritchard, a former Otago representative, who now plays for the North Linwood Club, will take part in the other semi-final today, but the fourth seeded, B. R. Crawford, also of North Linwood, was beaten in the first round by S. W. Bullen, of Cashmere, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6. Women’s Singles

In the other major section — the women’s singles—the semifinalists today will be Misses L. Luxton (Opawa), A. Snow (Cashmere), L. Mardon (Avonside) and C. Smith (Rangiora). They had some uncertain moments in yesterday’s matches. Miss Luxton, seeded first and first ranked for the province, beat a young opponent, Miss B. Mollison (St. Albans), 7-5, 6-3, but she looks in good enough form to win the title. It seems unlikely that the tournament will be completed today, although several of the sections will be. Those which are not will be finished on Saturday. Burton was set a hard task by Scarlett, but he is a player who revels in a three-set match and whose determination steadily increases throughout a long match, especially if he is down at the beginning. Scarlett had already shown in his match with Healey that he is very fit, that he has fine recovery powers, and that he has a smash almost impossible to reach. He showed those qualities again in the first set of his match with Burton. Fine Volleying Burton’s net play and volleying from all parts of the court developed to a high standard, and he took advantage of Scarlett’s tendency to move to the net on shots that did not warrant it. He passed Scarlett beautifully down the sides. Healey was not as successful, but he had his chances. Winning the first set without much bother, Healey could have won when he broke Scarlett’s service to be 7-6. He then dropped his own service and lost a long and hard second set, 11-13. The Canterbury player later made too many mistakes to win. Burton did not reach his semifinal without difficulty: the young Elmwood playet, D. J. Marshall, took him to three sets in the quarter-finals. Burton missed many smashes early, which he could ill-afford against Marshall’s excellent ground strokes. He struck form in his overhead later when his net-rushing was too much for Marshall, who also aided his opponent by serving double faults. Bullen did well to eliminate Crawford, who in the past has done well at this tournament. Crawford won the first set, Amt he made far too many errors later.
