KOWAI SPORTS MEETING
Annual Event At Sefton Domain A varied and interesting programme attracted an excellent crowd to the Kowai Athletic Sports Club’s annual Easter meeting at the Sefton Domain yesterday. Although cyclists found the clay track still soft and slow, particularly as most of them had been riding on asphalt, it had recovered remarkably well after the wet spell, and there were some excellent finishes. M. Thompson, who slipped the field in a heat of the two miles Canterbury cycling championship, was given no chance of repeating his tactics m the final, which was won by J. Williams from K. Brown. Williams rode a sound race in the five miles Kowai wheel race, to gain first place in a tight finish, after both E. Dawson and M. Thompson had failed to hold substantial leads after tear-away tactics in the concluding laps. The South Island championship standing chop with a 13-inch pine log was won by R. T. McDonald in 26.65ec, and Rogers and D. Seymour took the South Island double-handed saw title by cutting a 20-inch pine log in 15.6 sec. Taking part in dancing events from under eight years upwards, Brent Ingram had the distinction of winning the C. H. Ford Cup for most, points in dancing events, and the Barbara Peter Challenge Cup for most points under 10. Rosalind Good gave an outstanding performance in winning the Seann tnubhais open, and there were several very promising competitors m the 12-14 age group. There was a * so more than the usual number classes' 5 competing in 016 younger - 1 * was a disappointment for most of the spectators that remained behind the barrier that no determined effort was made to clear the considerable number of persons from the centre of the arena, where at times they completely obscured the wood chopping and other events.
