Bedivus Has Good Win In Members ' Handicap
Bedivus, which had not won since November, 1955, proved too good in the conditions for her rivals in the Members’ Handicap, the second leg of the double, at Addington on Saturday. She made a good beginning from 24 yards and improved her position to be a close seventh with six furlongs to run. Her owner-trainer, D. J. Campbell, took her up to Overdrive at the half-mile post and she was clear a furlong further on. She was seven lengths ahead of Overdrive racing to the straight, with Loyal Cis right up next, clear of Rola Veyor. Loyal Cis closed on Bedivus in the final stages, but she failed by a length and a half to catch the Ashburton mare. Loyal Cis was in or near the lead all the way and had every chance. Overdrive, which was also well up throughout, stopped badly to be 15 lengths back, third, four lengths in front of Rola Veyor, which was followed by Scottish Fair, Double Talk, and Kelso. Lauder Lady broke with about half a mile to run, interfering with Loyal Cis, Kelso, Brandon, and Star Dora. Phantsy Holds On Phantasy led all the way in the Monte Carlo Handicap and she held off the favourite, Parable, in the run home. Phantasy was five lengths clear in the early stages, and she had a lead of eight lengths at the mile post. She was eased slightly, and Tehana got within three lengths of her with six furlongs to run. She went away again and led by eight lengths from Tehana and Parable at the straight entrance, with five lengths to Responsive, Arriba, and Blue Jay. Phantasy did not have much to spare, but held on to win by a length and a half. Parable made a game effort in the straight to close on the winner, but made no real impression. He took second place four lengths in front of Tehana, which had a perfect run. Responsive, after being slow away, made up some ground for fourth, clear of Blue Jay, with gaps to Arriba and Bude. Johnny Hall, Bude, Triple Crown
and Responsive gave ground at the start.
Dresden Lady, third in the Wilhams Handicap last week, decisively won the Autumn Stakes. She did not have a good run, and racing to the straight, she was wide out behind La Mignon, Rey Derby, Gold Cloud, Showdown,-Ruth Again, which broke Ricochet, and Dresden Lady. The latter continued her run and took the lead just-inside the furlong. She won well by two lengths. Showdown, after breaking at the start, moved into a handy position on the inside with six furlongs to run. He finished strongly, but was no match for the winner.
Ricochet, the early leader, made up ground in the straight to take third place, four lengths in front of Gold Cloud, which just shaded Auditor and La Mignon, with Solemnity and Rey Derby nextj clear of Banjo. Sandy Direct, Morere, Commander Spangle, Showdown, and Banjo gave ground at the start. Ruth Again broke twice in the running. Dan’s Choice in Form Dan’s Choice took the lead from Fogbound with one mile and a quarter to run in the Intermediate Handicap, and he was not afterwards headed. Jaquine, Flammula, and See All were almost on terms with him racing to the straight, with Fogbound, Madam Grattan, and Durban Chief next. Jaquine challenged Dan’s Choice inside the furlong, but she could make no real impression. Dan’s Choice finished strongly, and won by three-quarters of a length Jaquine trotted an improved race for second, two and a half lengths in front of Flammula, which had every chance. See All tired in the straight and was a length away fourth, two lengths in front of the early pacemaker, Fogbound, which did not run on. •

He was fairly handy most of the way, and moved clear with two and a half furlongs to run. Zagar moved up to him racing to the straight, where they were three lengths in front of Macklin and Starwise, which had been checked near the two-furlong post. Starwise broke again and Dinnie Daley soon shook off Zagar and won by a length from Macklin, which, had every chance.
