TROTTING DANNIEL’S PRIDE WINS CUP

Addington Meeting In Rain

The Normanby-trained Danniel’s Pride gained his third win for the season and his most important success to date when he narrowly beat Light Nurse in the £2OOO Easter Cup. the main race and first leg of the double on the third dav of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting on Saturday.

Drizzle throughout the day made conditions unpleasant for the surprisingly large attendance. The track was very wet and sheets of mud flew from every sulky. It was one of the worst days for racing at Addington for many years.

Danniel'g Pride, raced by Mr J. McKay and trained by R. G. Cameron, was driven by D. C. Watts- He was sent to the front with nine furlongs to run. He had a keen struggle with Light Nurse over the last half-furlong, but held on to win by a head. Super Royal, after being handy most of the way. battled on for third, with the others well beaten. The second leg of the double, the Members’ Handicap, was won by the Ashburton-owned and trained Icevus mare, Bedivus. She held off Loyal Cis, which met a bad check near the half-mile post. The Danniel’s Pride-Bedivus double combination returned £325 4s for £l. Battle Cry completed a double for the meeting when he outstayed the field in the New Zealand Hambletonian Handicap, the main race at the meeting for straight-out trotters. Battle Cry was patiently driven by his trainer, R. Young, and finished boldly to hold off the fast-finishing Cabra by two lengths, with the tiring Quite Contrary third, clear of Barravey Most of the others crossed the line in a walk. Totalisator investments amounted to £99.352, including £8336 10s on the double machine, compared with £140,451 15s last year. The total for the three days was £285,764, compared with £308,114 10s last year. Easter Cup Lookaway broke and Starbeam lost ground at the start of the Easter Cup, Stadium Chief leading out, to be passed at the end of half a mile by Danniel’s Pride. Light Nurse was ninth at the mile post. She began to improve her position after passing the halfmile post, and followed Danniel’s Pride in to the straight, two lengths in front of Stadium Chief and Te Koi, with Super Royal, Don Hall and Paia Royal next. Inside the furlong Light Nurse set out after Danniel’s Pride, but in a great finish Danniel’s Pride lasted long enough to win by a head. Light Nurse, which had previously raced best on firm tracks, paced a fine race for her placing. She was three lengths in front of Super Royal, which had every chance. Stadium Chief battled on for fourth a neck back, two lengths in front of Don Hall, with a gap to Excel sa and Highland Air, with Starbeam and Local Light next and Lookaway at the rear. Lookaway moved up to be handy with six furlongs to run. but soon began to tire. Battle Cry’s Win

Battle Cry, from 60 yards, outstayed the field in the New Zealand. Hambletonian Handicap. Quite Contrary was first out, but at the end of half a mile Centennial Star took over. He was 10 lengths clear with one mile to run, but soon after he began ,to tire and Quite Contrary raced past him with half a mile left. Quite Contrary led racing to the straight from Battle Cry, which was on the inside of Barravey, with Cabra close up, well clear of Precaution. Battle Cry was pulled out to challenge Quite Contrary about the furlong post. He soon took her measure and held on to win by two lengths. Cabra, which was well back most of the way, finished faster than any other horse, but he was too late. He was two lengths in front of the tiring Quite Contrary, with three lengths to Barravey. Precaution was a long way back fifth, ahead of Lady Baffelan and Quick Silver, with another long break back to Recruit, which at one stage was almost a furlong from the leader. Sprint to Invicta After appearing to be well beaten on the home turn, Invicta sprinted well along the rails in the straight to win the Au Revoir Handicap. Invicta lost about four lengths when he was slow' away, Super Royal leading out from Derive, which went to the front at the end of a furlong. Local Light, which broke with six furlongs to run, was close to Derive racing to the straight, with Super Royal and Roy Grattan right up, ahead of Invicta and Count Grattan. Roy Grattan took the measure of Derive inside the furlong and appeared to have the race won until Invicta challenged again along the inside. Invicta finished gamely and won by half a head. Rov Grattan paced his best race for some time to take second place, a neck in front of Derive, which has never raced well in bad ground. Super Royal had every chance, but did not run on. She was three lengths back fourth, ahead of Scottish Brigade, with Lady Belmer, Cembala and Count Grattan well clear of Local Light, which broke again at the straight entrance.
