RACING FIELD DAY FOR N.Z. HORSES AT RANDWICK

fN.Z. Press Association— Copyright)

SYDNEY, April 21. New Zealand horses had a field day at Rand wick yesterday, beginning with Slogan II winning his second successive Doncaster Handicap. In other races the New Zealand-bred stayer, Monte Carlo, won the A.J.C. St. Lcger Stakes, Llanisfair won the Tocai Handicap, and Redcraze won the weight-for-age Autumn Stakes.

Stewards opened an inquiry im- i mediately after Llanisf air’s eight 1 lengths win in the 10-furlong Tocai Handicap, and called on the horse s connexions to explain the New Zealander's form in last week’s mile-and-a-half Autumn Handicap, m which he finished a poor ninth Llanisfair started second favourite at 5-2 yesterday. The week before be was a hot 5-4 favourite. Slogan 11. ridden by the leading Sydney jockey. Jack Thompson, had a hard race to take the Doncaster Handicap. He jumped out well from Ko. 1 at the barrier, and Thompson had him up with the leaders for the whole of the mile journey, and kept him close to the rails. Rounding the turn into the straight Thompson had to take Slogan n outside only one horse at he set out after the leader, Firedust. Mac’s Amber Challenges Slogan 11, making the most of his light weight of 7-12, raced up to Firedust in the straight and ran clear. In the closing stages of the race the Victorian horse, Mac’s Amber, put in a tremendous burst to challenge, but Thompson rode hard and kept Slogan II in front, to pass the post a winner by half a length. Firedust, which came again after surrending the lead, held on gamely to take third place from the fast-1 finishing Kingster—perhaps the unhickiest horse in the race. Kingster, usually a smart beginner, missed the start and was last in the first few strides. He was still a long way back third last after settling down. His jockey, Athol Mulley, tried desperately to take Kingster— a 9-4 favourite—into a better position, and he made up a great deal of ground on the outside to be eleventh passing the half-mile and ninth at the home turn. Mulley then forced Kingster through an opening wide-out in the straight and he made up an enormous amount of ground to finish fourth. His run was one of the best seen ta the big mile race at Randwick. Ma Reine Ninth Of other New Zealand horses in the 18-horse field, the mare Ma Reine, having her first run in Australia, did best. Ridden by Arthur Ward. Ma Reine was 14th at the turn and came home well, without ever looking a danger, to finish ninth in a bunch of horses. Decisive, ridden by the New Zealand jockey, R. J. Skelton, finished right behind her. He was always near the rear half of the field. Yes Please, ridden by Neville Sellwood. and a strong tip for the race, msde a belated run in the straight, but could not sustain it. and finished exevenui. He had been slow to begin. King’s Fair ran a shocking race for a horse that this year won the rich Newmarket 'Handicap in Melbourne. Monte Carlo Wins Monte Carlo moved up sharply in the Sydney Cup betting for Monday when he won the mile and quarters AJ.C. St. Lcger Stakes. The double Derbv winner—he won the AJ.C. and the Victoria Derbys last year as a three-year-old—won easily by six lengths, and gave his owner. Ken Austin, the New Zealand studmaster. a double. Austin is part-owner of Slogan 11. in partnership with Frank Dalton, who trains both Slogan II and Monte Carlo. Jack Thompson also rode Monte Carlo. Biggest danger seen for Monte Carlo was the Victorian horse Summalu—also New Zealand bred—which failed to run up to his best form. Summalu tried to steal the big race, making a fast run from the seven furlongs, which took him to the front at the five furlongs. Thompson momentarily took Monte Carlo up with Summalu, but was blocked and fell back. At the half-mile the jockey. Arthur Ward, had Summalu in the lead, by two lengths, but Summalu tired badly. Thompson took Monte Carlo to the front and the race was over. Summalu finished fourth. Llanisfair in Form Llanisfair was neavily backed in the 10-furlongs Tocai Handicap, and started at 5-2, with Magic Carpet favourite at 2-1. The New Zealand stayer was last away, and was near last from the mile to the six furlongs. Passing the half-mile he was fifth, but he ran well clear a little later and went right away from the opposition for an effortless eight-lengths win. Insular came in second, with Magic Carpet a poor third a length and three-quarters back. The stewards closely questioned the trainer. T. J. Smith, and the jockey, George Moore, after Llanisfair’s win. They adjourned their inquiry until tomorrow. They asked Smith to bring evidence of his betting transactions on Llanisfair in last week’s Warwick Farm race, and also on yesterday’s Tocai Handicap to the resumed hearing. There was some hooting and catcalling from the crow’d as Moore brought Llanisfair back to scale, but no reallv big demonstration. The Wellington Cup winner. Sombrero, ridden by R. J. Skelton, finished fourth in the Tocai Handicap, after being seventh at the turn. Redcraze Outclasses Field The champion gelding Redcraze clearly showed that his form last week was all wrong in the mile and • half w’eight-for-age Autumn Stakes. Ridden by Arthur Ward, the big New Zealand gelding made his opposition look like hacks as he went away from them in the straight for an easy five lengths win. Ward was easing Redcraze at the post. Last week in the mile and a quarter Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm Redcraze started a 1/1 on favourite, but could finish only third to the Victorian horse Mac’s Amber, with another Victorian. Sailor's Guide, getting up to take second placing from him. This week Sailor’s Guide could not get near the New Zealand horse, although he did make up a little ground in the straight. Tn yesterday’s Randwick meeting one of the biggest shocks came with the defeat of C/1 on favourite Todman—reearded as unbeatable —in the jeven furlongs Sires' Produce Stakes He was beaten easily in the threehorse field bv the Svdney sprinter Tulloch from the T. J. Smith stable. The big T. J. Smith stable won three events, with Tulloch. Uanisfair, and Redcraze. and got good prices for all their winners at 7/1. 5/2. and 10/9 on.
