Writer, Scuppered Run Impressively

Scuppered ran the fastest mile of the training at Riccarton on Saturday, but was no more impressive than the Great Autumn Handicap top-weight, Writer, which easily beat Goldwyn over the same distance and carried a good weight. Rise and Shine showed characteristic brilliance over six furlongs. Tess was another attractive trialist over that distance, and there were smart sprints over less ground by Sarcelle, Mindanao, Bugle Boy. Royal Zorra, and Mighty Dollar. The outside of the course proper was open for the final trials for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting today. Light rain set in early in the training, and the track cut out in the straight. Writer (D. J. Thistoll) drew away in the straight to beat Goldwyn (B. Dodds) by five lengths over a mile, run in lmin 48 2-ssec. Writer kept up a strong gallop in the straight and recorded 53 2-ssec for his last half mile. It was a sound trial by the Great Autumn Handicap top weight. Demand (L. McGuire) led Grand Bank (R. W. Gould) by a length finishing a mile in lmin 49 4-ssec. The first half mile was the faster—--54 2-ssec. Grand Bank, an indifferent track galloper, will have conditions to his liking in the Great Autumn Handicap today. Teaka Goes Well Handling the conditions well, Teaka (A. H. Eastwood) beat Calcutta Sweep (W. Beck) from the mile by two lengths in lmin 52 2-ssec, the last half in 54 2-ssec. Scuppered, ridden by the lightweight K. Reggett, had a length to spare from the faster-finishing Watch and Wait (C. T. Wilson), finishing the fastest mile of the morning—lmin 46 l-ssec. Scuppered went three lengths clear near the home turn, but Watch and Wait ran on. though she had pulled hard for a time early. They ran the first half mile strongly in 52 l-ssec. Iroquoi (N. Hoy) led Gay Tommy (B. S. Finlayson) by two lengths, then there was a length and a half to Tarbillon (W. Gibbs), at the end of a mile, run in lmin 47 4-ssec. The pace slackened in the straight after the first half mile had been covered in 52 4-ssec. Mundus (L. McGuire), with an advantage in the weights, beat Cristatus (T. Lyons) from the mile by three lengths in lmin 50sec. They pgfidrded 53 l-ssec for the first half mile. stablemates Nehru (J. Smith) and Shame (D. J. Thistoll) ran seven furlongs on terms in lmin 36 4-ssec, the last four in 54sec. Both carried good weights. Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) and Bosky (R. E. Johnstone) recorded lmin 50 4-ssec for their mile after running the first half strongly in 53 4-ssec. Bagatelle (B. Parsons), a Warstep Stakes candidate, sprinted her seven furlongs in lmin 34 3-ssec. The stablemates Neptune’s Pride (N. Bonney) and Lucky Time (T. Lyons) ran seven furlongs on terms in lmin. 36 l-ssec, the last four in 55sec. Royal Display (J. R. Currie) led Fleur (R. Hanlin) by half a length, with Steadfast (G. Lee) in a gap behind them, after running a mile in lmin 50 4-ssec, the last half in 56sec. Fit Hack Cheyenne (W. Hanlin) sprinted from the seven furlongs in lmin 37 3-ssec, recording 54sec for the last half mile. He is a fit horse for the Papanui Handicap today. Every Night (T. J. Smith) was galloping strongly a length and a half clear of Meteorologist (D. J. Thistoll), with another length and a half to Brown Baron (J. Smith) after running a mile. Every Night recorded

lmin 37 3-ssec for the last seven furlongs and 54 4-ssec for the concluding four. Motueka (R. W. Gould) led Copenhagen (W. Hanlin) by half a length ending six furlongs in lmin 23 4-ssec, the last four in 54 2-ssec. Neither was hurried at any stage of the trial. Keep Time (W. Hanlin) started at the six furlongs ahead of Tess (R. W. Gould), with Smuggles (J. L. Coulter) further behind. But Tess quickly sped up to Keep Time and drew right away in the straight, winning a good trial by five lengths. She recorded lmin 18 4-ssec, and 53 3-ssec for the last half mile. Smuggles made up some ground near the end to finish two lengths behind Keep Time. Juventas Well Clear Rising Sun (D. Grubb) was of no use to Juventas (J. C. Bagby) in the straight in their six furlongs trial. Juventas sped five lengths clear near the end and recorded lmin 22 2-ssec, the last half-mile taking 54 4-ssec. lone (L. J. Ellis) showed her fitness for the Warstep Stakes in beating Dhofar (W. Hanlin) and Nasib (A. H. Eastwood) over six furlongs. Dhofar opened up a good lead early, but lone ran the last furlong strongly and beat her by half a length. Nasib, right at ease under the conditions, finished alongside Dhofar. lone recorded lmin 19 l-ssec for the distance: Dhofar sped over the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec. Merrimayes (B. Taggart) was of no use to Rise and Shine (C. T. Wilson) over six furlongs. The fast Sun King mare drew out to win a good trial by four lengths in lmin 18sec, the last four taking 51 3-5 sec. Rise and Shine has seldom, if ever, been better, but a dry track for the Greater Easter Handicap today might have shown her to better advantage. Fuel (D. J. Thistoll) was running on three-quarters of a length ahead of Holman (J. C. Bagby) ending six furlongs in lmin 21 l-ssec, the last four in 52 4-ssec. It was a smart Warstep Stakes trial by Fuel. Red Elm (B. Parsons) was shading Eileen Gloss (R. W. Gould) and was clear of Beauty Queen (R. A. Muir) ending six furlongs in lmin 19 1-5 sec, the last half-mile fin 54sec. Jungle (J. W. McDonald), carrying a good weight, easily beat Maracaibo (G. D. Lee) over six furlongs. Jungle kept up a strong gallop in the straight, handling the conditions well, and beating Dalray’s halfbrother by three lengths and a half in lmin 22 2-sseg. They ran the first two furlongs in 26 3-ssec. Fast Sprints Sarcelle (W. Hanlin) and the Wa-nganui-trained Mindanao (J. C. Bagby) sprinted half a mile before the track cut out. They sped over the distance in 50 4-ssec. Sarcelle finished a shade better than her companion. Melinda Jane (N. Hoy) also recorded 50 4-ssec for her half-mile, and appeared to do her work well under a light weight. Fulgent (N. Hoy) sprinted his halfmile in 51 4-ssec, rounding off a pleasing preparation for the Great Easter Handicap. The stablemates, Ditched (G. D. Lee) and Uproar (J. R. Currie) ran strongly from the half-mile on terms in 51 l-ssec. It was a smart gallop. Dower (R. McDonald) and Fern (J. L. Coulter) sprinted from the half-mile in 52 2-ssec, finishing on terms. Bugle Boy (N. Hoy), with less weight up, led Lucrative (C. T. Wilson) by two lengths after running five furlongs, the last four in 51 3-ssec. Bugle Boy shaped well under the conditions, and may be a strong light-weight in the Great Easter. Royal Zorra (G. D. Lee) beat Hot Drop (D. J. Thistoll) from the five furlongs by a length and a half in 51 2-ssec. Royal Zorra showed zest for her work, and is obviously right at her best for the Great Easter Handicap. The Champagne S.takes candidate. Bow Tie (N. Hoy) and Imitation (B. S. Finlayson), worked up to speed after passing the six furlongs and ran the last half-mile in 54 4-ssec. Sweet Christine (N. Hoy) had a diminishing lead of a length and a quarter from Amulette (R. E. Johnstone) and Rome (B. McTaggart), with Pickard (D. J. Thistoll) threequarters of a length back, ending half a mile in 54 2-ssec. Sweet Christine sped clear by three lengths early in the trial. The Hastings-trained Sharp (D. J. Thistoll) led Royal Avon (C. T. Wilson) and Miss Fire (A. H. -Eastwood) by a neck after running half a mile in 52 l-ssec. Sharp ran the distance out strongly. It was an encouraging trial for the Champagne Mighty Dollar (J. W. McDonald) one of the last to sprint, showed his fitness for the Great Easter Handicap .in recording 51 4-ssec for half a mile under a good weight. He is in first-class order for his Riccarton engagements. Milling Bay (D. Grubb) out jumped Walkova (B. Parsons) at the last of four flights of hurdles, and finished a good round with a short lead. He is to race over hurdles at Riccarton tomorrow. SCRATCHINGS FOR RICCARTON Skylight and Rise and Shine were scratched yesterday for the Great Easter Handicap, the first leg of the double on the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Riccarton today. Calcutta Sweep, Royal Warrant and Cornflake have been scratched for the second leg, the Great Autumn Handicap.
