Fire Hoses Used By Police

Police reported that 10 demonstrators were detained. About 20 policemen were injured. The police turned fire hoses on about 1000 members of the Com-munist-led Transport Union, who marched towards the Ministry of Works and Transport The two-day strike—coinciding with the start of the Easter holidays—has paralysed rail traffic throughout France and disrupted public transport in Paris. Financial circles estimate it has cost France between £lO million and £l5 million. Metal workers of both Communist and Socialist unions will present wage demands to employers on April 25, and the Communist union has announced it will urge strike action to back a claim for an 8d an hour increase for workers at the State-owned Renault motor-car factory in Paris.
