“Real Gain For Peace”
LObiuON. July 22. The British Foreign Secretary (Mr R A Eden) was loudly cheered when he spoke in the House of Commons about the terms of the cease fire in Indo-China. He said the arrangement was the best that could be reached in the circumstances of each individual case. The fact that they had been able to reach agreement in the last days was due to the courage and tenacity of the French Prime Minister (Mr MendesFrance). ~ , The only alternative would be continued fighting, misery, suffering, and the possibility of a spread in the fighting. The agreement was a real gain for peace. . . ... The former Foreign Secretary in the Labour Government . (Mr Herbert Morrison) said the House would share a sense of relief that there was a eease fire. There were many complications left for further consideration. Mr Eden said that when the House saw the terms it would not be distressed at them.
