The third award from the Noel Newson Memorial Fund has recently been made to Miss Jennifer Barnard, of Christchurch. The fund is administered by four trusted, including the Mayor of Christchurch, the professor of music at Canterbury Unii versity College, qnd two representsj i tives of music organisations. The fund Jis to commemorate Mr Noel Newson, a noted New Zealand pianist, and a j prize of £25 is given each year to [assist students of exceptional musical j promise. Mrs D. Radley demonstrated winter decoration at the July meeting of the garden circle of the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League. Mrs V. Barnett presided. Competition results were:—Arrangement of flowers in an unusual container, A class: Miss S. Laine 1, Miss A. Phillips 2, Mrs W M. Wilson 3. B class: Mrs V. Collins 1, Mrs L. J. Smith 2, Mrs J. O’H. Tobin 3. Best bloom: Miss Hill 1, Mrs Tobin 2, Mrs A. H. Manson 3. Mrs D. G. McFadden presided at the first birthday party of the Mairehau branch of the League of Mothers. Eighty-five branch members, friends, and members of the Canterbury provincial executive were present. Entertainment provided included three recitations by Mrs Pashby, two duets by Mrs Vinnell and Mrs Buchanan, and a play by the drama group of the branch. At the cake-cutting ceremony Mrs W. Grant, provincial president, was presented with a floral token and representatives of sister branches and visiting organisations were given a handkerchief novelty. Mrs McFadden was presented with a spray from branch members.
The president (Mrs Eustace) presided over 30 members at the July meeting of the Kaiapoi Plunket Mothers’ Club. Miss Dunne, of the Health Department, Christchurch, showed two films entitled, “Children Growing Up” and “Children Learning by Experience.” Competition winners were Mesdames D. Vaughan (2), E. Wyatt, J. Anderson, L. Williams, Coup, M. Wyatt, and Leaver. A concert was presented to the men at Paparua Prison recently by Mr Sweney’s Eureka concert party. Transport was provided by members of the Rotary Clubr The programme inclined songs by Mrs Nola Hamilton and Messrs William Hamilton and John Dekkers, pianoforte duets by Misses Jill Bond and Beverley Burrowes. banjo duets by Mrs Anita Reeves and Mr Rex Hills, piano accordion solos by Mr Brian Savage, humorous items and sketches by Mrs Hilda Cooper. Misses Marjorie Nelson and Anna Pond and Messrs Frank Cooper and Hugh Taylor; and national and novely dances by Misses Patricia Grenfell, Joy Savage, and Isobel Walker, and Mr Ross Munro. The accompanists were Mesaames Dot Stevens and Margaret Hills, and the compere was Mr Hugh Taylor. THE CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB BALL will be held in the WINTER GARDEN on TUESDAY, AUGUST 10th.
