T.A.B. A«aney In Fendalton Sought
An application for permission to erect a Totalisator Agency Board agency in the Fendalton shopping area at the corner of Clyde and Burnside roads was considered by the Waimairi County Council at its meeting on Thursday evening. One of the Fendalton riding members, Cr A. R. Blank, said it was amazing that the applicant should want to open an office in Fendalton. The other member for the riding, Cr. A. L. Haslam, said that the council must be as judicial and fair as possible, and must not rush the matter. He would like to know what the ratepayers thought. The application was referred to the council’s townplanning and reserves committee. Plastic Bottles To eliminate the danger from broken bottles on roads and beaches, Mr I. V Wilson suggested at a meeting of the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union last evening that the union try to persuade bottle manufacturers to make their wares out of plastics. “I believe that plastic bottles would not break and I don’t think they would cost as much as glass bottles,” he said. The president, Mr P. W. Breen, said that they might first see whether plastic bottles were available and inquire whether brewers and bottlers were interested. Inquiries will be made. Took Leave of Law When Senior-Detective J. J. Murray arrived with an accused person at the Magistrate’s Court, Lower Hutt shortly after midday on Thursday he took the opportunity of meeting the new Magistrate for the Hutt Valley circuit, Mr J. Drummond, S.M. Whne Senior-Detective Murray was with the Magistrate, the accused, who had been left in the Courtroom, disappeared. He was rearrested in Wellington about four hours later, and appeared in Cour 1 yesterday. Theft from Gnlf Pavilion The pavilion of the Hagley Golf Club was broken into on Thursday night. Cupboards were forced open, and table cloths and tea towels, valued about £l5, were stolen.
Brick Shaped Beer Bottles ‘‘Beer bottles should be shaped like bricks and the ‘empties’ used for building houses,” said Mr T. A. Gerrard, at a meeting of the Northland College board of governors in Whangarei. "The bottles carry too low a refund price, and should bring at least 2d each. People will not bother to retrieve them at Id or less,” he said. The board was considering a proposal by the Kaitaia and District Society to petition Parliament about the “grave danger” of bottles on roads. It decided only to receive the society’s letter.
