Sawdust And Glenlivet For Washdyke Double

RACING

The Claremont Handicap, first leg of the double at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting today, was to mark the reappearance of the good race mare Notable, but plans have had to be changed. She has had some filling in a leg, and was scratched yesterday. Sawdust will be a firm favourite for the Claremont Handicap after his game second to Bahrein over the same distance and on the same course earlier this month. Mr D. McFarlane’s big Milling gelding will probably be in front before the race is far under •way, and he will not surrender his lead without a great fight. Betting will probably be evenly spread over several of the others. Denominate will have a sizeable following because of his consistency, and the Orari stablemates, Royal Voyage and Cloudy, will have many backers who will be hoping for peak performances, which would give both good chances.

King Karri has dropped out of the Teschemaker Steeplechase, second leg of the double. Glenlivet won over the Washdyke country under lOst 7lb on on July 3, and a rise of 51b is not expected to halt his winning run. His neat jumping and speed may be more tharr his opponents will be able to cope wfth.

Riverstone and Young Prince may be the closest to Glenlivet at the finish; Fort Silver and the Waimate winner Silent Sol have the most encouraging form of the others; and the Riccarton-trained Sultry may be the improver. In this field, and bracketed with Glenlivet, is Free Gift, a winner at Wingatui at his last start If all goes well with him in the meantime Free Gift will be the leading South Island contender for Grand National Steeplechase honours on August 7. His performance today will show what progress he is making in his preparation for Riccarton.

As in the steeplechase, horses from I Mr W. E. Hazlett’s Invercargill stable are at the top of the handicap for the hurdle race. In Test Flight and Chief Light the stable has two young jumpers which should go a long way. Today Chief Light will be attempting to improve a sequence of two wins from two starts. Test Flight’s record from two starts is not as good, but he may yet prove to be the better winner over The weather was fine at Timaru yesterday. The track should be in good winter order.
