UNILATERAL DISARMAMENT OF N.Z.
Sir. —Now that the Conservative, Mr Churchill, has confirmed the judgment of the Labour Town Council of Coventry that there is no known defence against the H-bomb, what are we. the common people of the world, going to do about it? I suggest that the unilateral disarmament of New Zealand the “social workshop of the world/ becomes practical . politics. History shows that those who prepare for wai inevitably get it. So going by experience, it is only a matter of when World War 111 will strike us. If that happens, shall we be any worse off if we disarm now? And there is ‘ this point: that those who disarm will have to let i their imperial v c‘ims go free. Niue. Samoa, et''., will have to be tiven ful 1 ; and immediate self-government. Surelv ■ there is little risk and a good example • to give an immediate unilateral dis- , armament.—Yours, etc.. N. M. BELL. July 23, 1954.
