UNION’S APPEAL UPHELD

QUALIFICATIONS OF OFFICERS (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 23. The Patea Freezing Workers’ Union’s appeal against a decision by the Registrar of Industrial Unions has been upheld by the Arbitration Court The Court’s decision, which has been received by-the union’s secretary (Mr T. C. Gallagher), concerns an appeal against the refusal of the registrar tc amend the rules of the union so as to require candidates for office to have been financial member of the union for two years. The registrar declined on the grounds that the proposed amendment was “an unreasonable and oppressive encroachment upon the democratic rights of new members.” “After consideration we have formed the opinion that the proposed amendment is not in any way unreasonable,” says the Court’s decision.
