Promise For Increased Insurance Benefits

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, July 22. A promise has been given to the House of Commons by the Minister of Pensions (Mr Osbert Peake) that plans for a general increase in national insurance benefits, including old-age and war pensions, to their 1946 value, will be announced before Christmas. The increases will be linked with higher insurance contributions.

Political correspondents suggest that, based on the fall in buying value of the £ sterling since the war, the Government’s promise means that old-age pensioners who are single will get about 4s a week in addition to their present £1 2s 6d. and married couples about 4s 9d in addition to their present £2 14s a week.

There are about 4,250,000 old-age pensioners in Britain.
