BARUN GLACIER ACCIDENT
Frost-Bitten Climber Loses All Toes Mr James McFarlane, the New Zea-' land climber who was badly frostbitten last April when he lay for 18 hours in a crevasse on the Barun glacier in the Himalayas, has had all his toes and part of the little finger on each hand removed. The climber is a patient at Burwood Hospital. Giving this information yesterday, Mrs McFarlane said that her husband was “very happy at Burwood and very cheerful."
Mrs McFarlane is hopeful that her husband will be able to walk again though she said that it would probably mean his having to learn again. She said that they had recently heard from an American climber who had had a similar experience to her husband. In spite of the loss of his toes he was able to walk again so that it could hardly be detected that his fdet were not perfectly normal. He had made such a good recovery that he had been able to resume high mountaineering.
