NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL

BURNSIDE ROAD TENDERS OPENED Tenders were opened on Wednesday for a new primary school of eight classr rooms, library, and administration block in Burnside road. The Canterbury Education Board will send its recommendation promptly to the Education Department in Wellington it is hoped that within two or three weeks a contract will be approved. The building should be available for the second terni of 1955. The new school initially will provide for only 320 pupils but it is the first move in one of the board’s larger development programmes. The site is on back land with entrances from both Burnside road and Ham road. The area available is about 20 acres which will ultimately serve also for an associated intermediate school. The Shirley area is to have yet another new primary school. Specifications are now being approved by the Education Department for four classrooms in Banks avenue. Besides the Shirley Primary School and the Shirley Intermediate School, the district, has recently gained the new Mairehau School which is already having additions and also well on the way to completion is the board’s biggest current development—a new 12-classroom school in Quinn’s roadPart of it may be finished by the third term, but to save undue disturbance to existing schools and interference with the builders the board will probably delay the opening until next February. yne of the most useful innovations will be a new school now being P lan «ed for Sockburn. The site is on the Mam South road a little way beyond the Wigram corner and the initial four classrooms and administration block will serve a growing residential area at present remote from schools m larger-populated localities. The new block should be available some time next year.
