PARTITION OF IRELAND
Appeals To Churchill And Eisenhower (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 7. The Anti-Partition of Ireland League has appealed to Sir Winston Churchill and President Eisenhower to apply to Ireland the principles of their recent six-point joint declaration of policy. The league claimed in a letter delivered to No. 10 Downing Street —a second copy addressed to President Eisenhower went to the American Embassy in London —that the proposals would be fully acceptable to the Irish people. The league quoted the principles of self-government and independence, and that of seeking unity in divided nations through free elections. “The demand of the Irish people is that Ireland be treated as a unity, and that they be allowed to govern themselves in the manner they decide,” the letter said.
“If Ireland, which for over 30 years has been partitioned against the will of the majority of its people, is to be denied the application of these principles, then the sentiments expressed in Washington must be regarded as empty and meaningless,” it added.
