TWO PRISONERS LASHED
PART IN WANDSWORTH GAOL MUTINY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 7. Two convicts at Wandsworth Prison, London, were given the "cat” for their part in the gaol riot on May 26 in which five warders and five prisoners were injured, the “Evening News” reported. William Dair got 18 strokes for mutiny and “gross personal violence” to prison officers, and Thomas Edward Harris got six strokes for mutiny. The punishment was ordered by visiting Magistrates on June 22, and confirmed by the Home Secretary (Sir David Maxwell Fyfe). Dair, aged 27, is serving seven years for causing grievous bodily harm, and Harris, aged 24, is serving seven years for burglary and armed robbery. During the riot prisoners armed with hammers from a work bench in the mailbag shop attacked prison guards. Three other prrisoners involved in the riot were found -to be unfit for corporal punshment and instead will lose privilege.
