PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO IMPORT DUTIES ON HOSIERY The Board of Trade .proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed under the following Tariff Item: TARIFF ITEM 136 (7): Hosiery, viz. (a) socks or stockings of silk; (b) socks or stockings of artificial silk or nylon; (c) other. The present rates of import duty in respect of this item are: TARIFF ITEM 136 (7) (a)—British Preferential 25 per cent.*, Australian Agreement 40 per cent., Canadian Agreement 55per cent., General 65 per cent.**. TARIFF ITEM 136 (7) (b) —British preferential 25 per cent., Australian Agreement 40 per cent., Canadian Agreement 55 per cent.. Most Favoured Nation 65 per cent., General 65 per cent.**. Tariff Item 136 (7) (c)—British Preferential 25 per cent.*, Australian Agreement 40 per cent., Canadian Agreement 45 per cent.. General 65 per cent.**. •Plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty in respect of imports from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union cf South Africa. During the course of this inquiry the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Bqard will consider whether such of the goods in question as are now subject to import licensing should be exempted from the requirements of import licensing, and in respect of such of the goods in question as are already exempt, whether import licensing should be -Tgimposed in respect of any of them. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of this tariff item, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, November 30, 1954, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Buildings, Stout street, Wellington. Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses (2nd edition), which has been approved by the board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs, or from the undernamed. A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undernamed on or before Tuesday, November 16, 1954.
