POSSIBILITY OF POWER CUTS
FURTHER DECLINE IN WATER STORAGE The repeated warnings that the loss of water storage for power is likely to bring power cuts in the South Island system seem likely to be borne out in practical terms next week. From Monday morning to Thursday morning this week, the water* storage fell by 6,330.000 units to a total of 92,550,000 units, and the State Hydroelectric Department has advised power supply authorities to prepare for a 10 per cent, cut from Monday. Only a dramatic change in the weather can avert the cuts and yesterday afternoon the department said nothing had been reported from the lakes to indicate that conditions were likely to produce an increase in the storage. Wednesday night’s heavy rain seemed to be mostly coastal. The Christchurch Municipal Electricity Department recently announced a power cut roster for use in periods of peak loading. No cuts were necessary last evening.
