HORNBY FAMILY’S FIRE LOSS
ASSISTANCE VALUED AT £BOO Gifts of cash and goods for the reinstatement of Mr and Mrs A. L. Halliday and their family, who lost their home and all possessions in a fire at Hornby on June 21, are valued at more than £230. The residents’ committee, assembled to arrange relief, was informed last evening that funds now totalled £525 4s 7d, mostly collected in a systematic canvass of the district. This does not include gifts made direct to the family. Included in this sum was £B3 16s 9d from the proceeds of a Sunday evening concert, £63 3s collected by Mr A. Condick, who canvassed gatherings of workers, and £5l 2s 6d raised by Mr Halliday’s colleagues in the Glassworkers’ Union. Three gifts of £25 each were received. A ’‘practical sympathiser” in Dunedin sent £2O and a Timaru family £5. A class at the Hornby School raised £2 10s, and Riccarton School children raised £3 10s. As the family’s most urgent need is a dwelling, the committee agreed that available funds should be used as a deposit on a house which will be available in two weeks if other financial arrangements are completed. The committee was unable to obtain a State house. At the Hallidays’ request the other house will be bought as a joint family home. The committee expressed appreciation to all who had assisted, especially the staff of the Paparua County Council and members of the Hornby Residents’ Association.
