N.Z. ATTITUDE TO PEKING
Surprise Felt In Australia (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, JULY 7. New Zealand’s conviction that the admittance of Communist Clnha to the United Nations was desirable has taken the Australian Government by surprise. Australia has not yet reviewed her earlier policy of opposition to the recognition of China and the admittance of Communist Chinese delegates to the United Nations. New Zealand did not inform Australia of her decision to support United Nations membership for Communist China. It is understood that the Australian Government accepts the argument of the New Zealand Minister of External Affairs (Mr T. C. Webb) that the absence of China from the United Nations has prevented a lessening of international tension, but is not prepared at present to sponsor Chinese membership for fear of an attack by the Labour Opposition and of an American withdrawal from the United Nations.
