WORK ON BURMASIAM ROAD
MONEY AVAILABLE TO FORMER PRISONERS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
LONDON, July 5. Siam paid £355.000 for the SiamBurma railway built by prisoners during World War 11, Mr Osbert Peake, the Minister of Pensions, said today. Mr Peake, who was answering a question in the House of Commons, said this amount had to be distributed between several governments whose nationals worked in building the railway. The British Government’s share was about £170,000. He said he hoped to be able to make a statement soon about the distribution of the money, and also about that available from the realisation of the remaining Japanese assets in Britain.
