AMNESTY TO WAR DESERTERS

FOUR APPLICATIONS IN N.Z. (New Zealand Press Association) - WELLINGTON, July 7. Out of a total of 47 deserters from the New Zealand armed forces between the outbreak of World War II and the end of 1945, four had taken advantage of the amnesty granted by the New Zealand Government in April of last year, said the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald) today. Those who wished to take advantage of the amnesty were required to apply in writing to their appropriate services headquarters by June 30 last. Two of the deserters who came forward under the amnesty were serving with the Army when they deserted, and one each was with the Navy and the Air Force. Three of the four deserted in New Zealand.

Mr Macdonald said that those who responded to the amnesty would receive a protecting certificate, and would not be prosecuted for desertion.

’Die total of 47 desertions during the period of hostilities and for six months afterward—-for which all servicemen were required to sign up—comprised 38 from the Army, seven from the Navy, and two from the Air Force.
