The Minister for Social Welfare, Mrs G. H. Ross, was 70 on Tuesday. She was entertained at a birthday dinner by Hamilton delegates to the Dominion conference of the National Party. She received a number of gifts and congratulatory i lessages from all parts of the Dominion, including one from the Governor-General, Sir Willoughy Norrie, and Lady Norrie. Miss H. C. Kirkwood, the 1952 New Zealand Commonwealth Fund fellowship holder, returned recently from the United States, where she studied at Cornell and Columbia Universities. Miss Kirkwood, a graduate of Otago University, took an M.A. degree at Columbia. The universities tfed an extremely high academic standard, and placed the emphasis on the individual student’s needs, said Miss Kirkwood. A foreign student adviser was on the professorial staff, and did valuable work for visiting students. There were many opportunities for New Zealand educationists to study in America. Apart from the Fulbright awards many private fellowships were offered. —(P.A.)
At the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society yesterday, the president (Mrs Janet Williams) presented a long service certificate to Mrs H. R. Smith, widow of a former town clerk in Christchurch. “I think it ought to be a gold crown,” said Mrs Williams. Mrs Smith is the only foundation member of the original committee formed 47 years ago and in all those years she has continued her active interest ih the society.” Mrs Smith, who was accorded musical honours, said she had greatly enjoyed her association with the society and it had rejoiced her heart to note its expansion and to give what help she could to new sub-branches. Mrs Smith is a life member of the society, is patroness of the Christchurch branch and- a member of the committee.
Mr and Mrs H. McGowan, of Hokitika, and formerly of the Waitaha settlement, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary recently. A family gathering was held at the home of one of their daughters, Mrs W. Jones, of Kokatahi. All of their daughters were present at the function. They are Mrs W. Cunniffe, of Hokitika, Mrs Little, also of Hokitika, and Mrs F. Bell, of Greymouth, as well as Mrs Jones. A large number of friends and other members of the family were present from all parts of the West Coast.
The results of the first night of a three-night Mitchell match played at Crockford’s Bridge Club were:— north-south: Mrs T. Milliken and Mrs N. Le Cren 1, Miss V. Sapsford and Mr E. A. Justice 2, Mrs C. E. Reid and Mrs P. Byrne 3; east-west: Mrs L. Housten and Dr. P. Brass 1, Mrs H. van Asch and Miss N. Williams 2, Mr and Mrs H. E. Booker 3.
There are now, in and around Christchurch, 25 Plunket Mothers’ Clubs with a total membership of 2000. This was reported at the annual meeting of the society yesterday by Mrs R. L. Jacobsen, who represents the clubs on the committee of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society.
The monthly meeting of the National Party garden circle was held in the party rooms. Mrs P. G. Stevens presided over a good attendance. Several new members were welcomed. The results of the competitions were as follows:—Class A—Decorative novelty: Mrs Percy Wright l,,Mrs R. I. Lamb 2. Large bloom: Mrs Kennedy 1, Mrs Wright 2. The Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society plans to erect during this year a new administration block at the Karitane Hospital, Cashmere. This was announced yesterday by the president (Mrs’Janet Williams) at the annual meeting of the branch. The new building, she said, would be built slightly above the present building. The present administrative block would be used as nurses’ quarters. At the monthly meeting of the St. Martins Townswomens Guild, Mr P. J.
