MAGISTRATE’S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) REMANDED On charges of being found drunk, and of being in possession of tickets which, there was caiise to believe, were designed to be used in an illegal lottery Andrew McLeod Kelman (Mr M. G. L. Loughnan) was remanded until July 21. Thomas David Keith Sherlock, aged 23, a car dealer (Mr H. S. Thomas) was remanded to August 12 when he appeared on a charge of stealing £l5O from Mary Emma Arnold. The remand was sought by De-tective-Sergeant G- W. Alty for the police. Bail was renewed. BREACHES OF PRICE CONTROL The Director of Price Control (Mr W. K. L. Dougall) charged Star Stores (High street), Ltd. with offering to sell potatoes at a price not in conformity with the Control of Prices Regulations. Evidence showed that the price charged was 31b for lOd when the price should have been 31b for Bjd. The defendants were fined £5 and ordered to pay costs, including solicitor’s fee, £3 3s. HOTEL CHARGES Hanson Jack- Fraser (Mr A. C. Perry), licensee of Warner’s Hotel, pleaded not guilty when he appeared on a charge of a breach of the Price Control Regulations in charging Mr Eggers £25 8s for board from February 11 to February 18. Mr W. K. L. Dougall, who appeared for the department, said Eggers had been charged £25 8s instead of £l9 ICs which represented an overcharge of £5 12s; the unauthorised charge being £1 a day for five days with bathroom two days out' of seven. If a bathroom were shared by' more than one person the charge should be shared. The charge arose out of the occupation of a double bedroom. A man, Kain, acting for Eggers, had arranged for two single bedrooms but on arrival in Christchurch had been allotted one double bedroom. Kain had refused to accept the allocation and had to seek accommodation elsewhere. At no stage was a request made for a double room, for which Eggers had been Edgar Francis Kain said he had arranged plane travel and accommodation for Eggers, his overseas principal. He had received a reply from Warner’s confirming his arrangements which were for two single rooms instead of a double bedroom which the two were expected to share. Kain had objected to the extra charge but Eggers had just refused to “make a fuss.”
To Mr Perry Kain said he had been tola that the board arrangements only applied to February 16, after which accommodation would be a difficult problem. Mr Perry said the double room had been occupied at Eggers’s request and double rates could be charged. The Magistrate said he could not see that a breach of the regulations had been committed and he would refuse to enter a Conviction. Fraser pleaded guilty to making an overcharge of Ils in charging Kain £l5 4s 9d instead of £l4 13s 9d, and an overcharge of 14s in the account of Mr and Mrs Biersley, On the former charge a fine of £4 was imposed and £2 on_ the other charge. WRONG MILK LABEL
Richard John McGee, a milkman, was charged with unlawfully selling pasteurised cream in a package not having the correct label. Mr P. T. Mahon, who appeared for the Health Department, said the charge was in respect of incorrect labelling of food. Cream bottles had been sealed with a wrong label. The department v’as not pressing for a penalty, but had brought the charge as a warning. McGee, who pleaded guilty, said he was one of a number of milk vendors who had offended. When vendors ran out of sealing caps it was impossible to secure any for three months and the only alternative was to turn the caps upside down. Defendant was ordered to pay costs. LICE-INFESTED SHEEP For exposing lice-infested sheep for sale at Addington on March 17, Albert Dymond, a farmer, was fined £2.
NO BUILDING PERMIT A. F. C. Rushton was convicted and fined £2 for removing buildings to a site in the Halswell county without obtaining a building permit. Mr C. G. Penlington appeared for the Halswell County Council. The Magistrate said he understood it had not been a wilful breach. FAILURE TO FURNISH INCOME RETURNS Fines were imposed on the following persons for failure to furnish returns of income: Waata Momo Taituha (1952), £4; Peter Rayner (1953), £3: Tahu Mata Ruru (1952). £3; Bernard Rogal (1952), £2.
