BY-ELECTION FOR PATEA
THREE NOMINATIONS RECEIVED
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAWERA, July 7. There will be three candidates in the by-election on July 31 for the Patea seat in Parliament. It had been expected that there would be only two. Nominations closed in Hawera at noon today with the returning officer (Mr H. L. S. Cole). The nominations are:—
Benjamin Donald Winchcombe, town clerk; of Ohakune, Labour Party/ John Duggan, farmer of Ohakune road, Raetihi, for the newly-formed New Zealand New Liberal Party. William Alfred Sheat, farmer, of 58 Dixon avenue, Hawera, unofficial National.
The by-election resulted from Mr Sheat’s resignation from Parliament as official National Party member on a question of party organisation in his electorate.
Mr Duggan, a former resident of Hawera, is a member of what he calls a “completely new party, the policv of which is based on the original Liberal ideals of Richard John Seddon.” He is a former Raetihi borough councillor, who did not contest the last municipal election, but is contesting a council by-election at Raetihi on Saturday.
