HARE EXPORTS
EMBARGO LIFTED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 7. The embargo placed recently on the export of hares has been lifted. The Minister of. Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake) announced this today. “I have now had an opportunitv to re-examine the position and to consult interested parties, including the Rabbit Destruction Council,” said the Minister. "As a result it has been decided that a continuation of the embargo is not warranted.
“Control of hares can safely be left to rabbit boards, but in areas outside rabbit board control, farmers rely on organised hare drives to keep down the hare population. If these drives were discontinued, farmers would have difficulty in dealing-with th? situation. It is now evident that many rural organisations depend largely on the proceeds from hare drives for the bulk of their finance, and a continuation of the embargo would be an embarrassment to them,” Mr Holyoake said. There was no intention to remove the embargo on the export of rabbits as that formed an essential part of the policy of “devaluing” the rabbit, said the Minister.
