GUATEMALA

Sir, —My earlier letter was concerned not with the rights and wrongs of Guatemala’s internal politics, but with one simple fact, clearly perceived by New Zealand’s delegate. A member State claiming to be subject to aggression was refused a hearing by the Security Council of the United Nations because the United States demanded prior rights for a regional body—the Organisation of American States. And this, of course, has aided rather than hindered the invaders. “G.A.P.” seeks to justify this by certain “parallels. If he can find a single reputable historian to uphold his version of what happened in Spain, he might be in a better position to peddle his particular version of the more recent events in Tibet and East Europe. Plainly, we need peace, we need the. United Nations to help, and the Charter cannot be continually undermined with impunity.—Yours, etc., P ELSIE LOCKE. July 6, 1954.

Sir,—The wheel has turned full circle! The American-dominated Security Council opposed alleged North Korean aggression and now supports rebel aggression in Guatemala. On account of piracy and blockade, the legally elected Guatemalan Government is denied access to arms and equipment; the aggressive rebels are supplied with war planes and armaments by the United States. The League of Nations failed through lack of co-operation and leadership. The United Nations is failing through being led by the nose by America. In the meantime, people are dying and suffering and property is being destroyed. After the destruction of Guatemala, who is going to be the next victim of American-sponsored aggression? Some time ago dangerous Dulles stated, “We will, oppose agression wherever it rears its head. ’ Evidehtly he has gone blind in the meantime; or can he only see through coloured glasses when looking at Guatemala? —Yours, etc., DON’T FOSTER DULLES. July 6, 1954. _
