MIGRATION OF INDIANS
ENTRY TO AUSTRALIA SOUGHT (NJZ. Press Association—Copyrlg'MJ
(Rec. 8 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 6. The Indian Government is planning to ask the Australian Government to allow Indians to come to Australia as migrants, it was learned authoritatively today. The intention is to ask Australia to allow in a small number of Indians each year as is done by Canada and the United States. It is believed that India would be satisfied if 100, or even 50 were admitted annually by Australia.
The proposal has been discussed on the highest level in India, and the Prime Minister (Mr Nehru) Is said to be personally interested in the matter. The Indian Government would give Australia an undertaking that those selected for emigration would be the finest types available, who would make a welcome addition to any population. The object would be to select principally farmers and others who would go on the land. '
At present Canada admits 100 Indians a year and the United States 50. There are at present 800 Indians in Canada and this number is being taken as the quota over an eighj-year period so that there will be no actual new arrivals in Canada until the end of that time.
There Is already a considerable number of Indian's in Australia, anil India will probably suggest that these be taken into consideration by the same method as adopted in Canada.
